Checking of traces in event viewer, there's problem related to RDPDD.dll, google tells us something related to graphic driver, suggested to turn off hardware acceleration, did accordingly and rebooted, still no luck.

Before screen light up, press "c" for CDROM boot, "Shift" for Safe Mode, which check and correct system volumes.

Default zfs support on 10.5 is read-only, get latest version from zfs.macosforge.org

diskutil can be used to shrink (resizeVolume) system volume and create ZFS partition.

Fighting fires for the whole morning, Sun ONE Calendar, to be replaced by M$ Exchange.
It suddenly gives problem, because I put it in a container in Solaris 10.
I have no luxury to trace why it happens, so I copy out the application and it's database.
Shutdown that zone, give the IP back to global zone.

Set the hostname to calendar server name, before start the calendar service. Or else, it will always redirect to the global zone hostname !!!

The good things,
1. overall it works fine.
2. centrino duo detected as 2 cpu instances (prtconf)
3. hvm shows up (xm info | grep caps, after I update BIOS and enabled VT in it)
4. battery status is there, just need to add applet to panel.
5. ethernet card works, e1000g0
6. wireless works, wpi0 (ifconfig wpi0 dhcp, from console, Administration/Network if from GNOME).

Needs improve,
1. xVM conflict with intel driver, have to change to "vesa" in order to work with xVM
2. sound card is not working.
3. power management, although powerd is running, keyboard is quite hot. Haven't found way to make it slow down.
4. it will be good if there's updates for some common applications (firefox, thunderbird ...) on the net.

xVM crashes on IBM X60

After a few round of reinstalling of opensolaris b77, I realized that the problem is not due to my installation. The only partially failed package was SUNWfilebench, the rest all looks in /var/sadm/install_data/install_log.

When I choose SXCE, everything runs fine. But when I choose xVM, everything also ok provided I don't login to GUI (GNOME/CDE). Every attempt will cause the whole system crash.

Since I am not trained on crash dump analysis, google may provide me some hints. After some tries of different keywords combination, "xen intel graphic cards" lead me to a bug (177465) on bugzilla.novell.com .

So it's the graphic driver not working properly with XEN. Before the next build of OpenSolaris, my workaround is to use "vesa" instead of "intel" driver.

Just go to command line login with root, run "/usr/X11R6/bin/xorgcfg", save the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
then change "intel" to "vesa" in the "Device" section.

suspend & hibernate of my Lenovo X60, everything is fine. But when I try to wake it up, only mouse still responding, screen is black with mouse cursor moving, only keys Fn+ are still working.

When I try to ssh in to it, it works. So it's something to do with graphic. Luckily google tells me some similar issue, which is caused by VBERestore. The following steps work for me,

When people try to upload PowerPoint files, it says extension mismatch or something.
In LocalSettings.php, .ppt is already allowed extension.

It turned out to be "file" command in Linux/Unix tends to identify .ppt file as "Microsoft Installer".

A quick solution, disable extension verification.

Configure an IP pool for NAT with fix-port, which means no port translations. This way can make sure "IP 47" passthrough, or else they will drop.

The symptom,
After displaying "Freeing unused kernel memory ... ", the sytem may or maynot display a few more line, then just stop there. You can still type on keyboard and it will display.

Possible reason,
RAM!!! The system happened to have 2x 128Mb DDR (IBM) and 2x 512Mb DDR (Kingston), remove either set of them, the system return to perfect normal.

We tried to install RedHat ES 3, installation no problem, but after installation, system stop just there, can't start.
CentOS 4.3 also tried, can't find root when boot from CD.
SuSE 10, CD boot stop at "Freeing unused kernel memory ..."

Waste me half a day to discover it.

If you have 8.26.18, it will ask you to downgrade to 8.23.7, on the contrary, if current system has 8.23.7, it will ask you to upgrade to 8.26.18. Why?

Here comes the reason, because I have ati-drivers-extra which depends on ati-drivers same version 8.23.7. So when "emerge --deep" found that my system don't have ati-drivers-8.23.7, it will ask for it. But when upgrade from 8.23.7 to 8.26.18, it wont check replace 8.23.7 will break the dependency. A bug for "emerge --deep", right?

How did I find out? I just mask ati-drivers-8.23.7 and wait for emerg --deep to complain, haha.

Or else, iptables will give you unknown error, and a very big number, maybe they should detect and load the necessary modules?

modules iptable_filter is not necessary if you want internet sharing only.

BTW, if iptable_filter is not loaded, "iptables -L" will give you a friendly message, that should be the way.

iptables v1.3.5: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

Downgrade Creative MuVo N200 firmware

Happily using my MuVo N200, until it starts to auto off so frequently. Google leads me to the creative forums.

People says the problem is due to firmware, and a list of useful firmware list was given here, so I just picked the latest 1.20.04, since I am always going for the latest.

Firmware upgrade always looks quite straightforward, Recovery Mode, run the downloaded executable, Bingo! All problems are gone.

Wait a minute, in fact, it's old problems gone, new problem appears, the volume now goes 0-20 instead of 0-40. At night or other quiet environment, volume 1 is too loud already!

On the forum, someone said that the downgraded from 1.20.04 to 1.12.01 by luck, try and error, no exact steps to follow. So I started to try my luck.

Luckily, I did it also, and there are some steps to follow if you have not found your luck.

1. Connect the MuVo in Recovery Mode, use 1.20.04 firmware, after you see more than 3 blue block, unplug MuVo quickly.

2. Connect it back in normal mode, try to access the file system, it will tell you not formated, say yes to format it. Now you MuVo is just a USB thumb drive, don't worry.

3. Connect in Recovery Mode again, now use 1.12.01 firmware, and let it finish. It takes some time to find, if it can't finish, try again from step 1, or else, you are really unlucky.

I found this when I try to emerge moto4lin, my only application that depends on QT.
After, qt3to4 *.pro, the compilation still refuses to go on. Then I realized that I am using qt4 now. The difference I encountered,

qt3::QString::contains -> qt4::QString::count
qt3::QPixmap::fromMimeSource -> qt4::QPixmap::QPixmap

Lucky, I got a running program after the above conversions.

of the fault?

There is a command "prctl" on the SGI Altix system, with which
you can specify what to do for the two notorious kernel
emulations: unaligned access and floating-point assist fault.
For example, if your Fortran program is run as


  $ prctl --fpemu=signal  your_program

the floating-point assist fault condition triggers SIGFPE. So,
if you compile your program with -g and run it under gdb as


  $ prctl --fpemu=signal gdb your_program

you'll find which line of your code is causing the fault.

On an ordianry Linux, there's a system call "prctl". This command
on Altix may be encapsulating it. (I found Solaris 9 also has this
command.) I wonder what other Linux systems on Itanium machines
are doing. This problem should be common to all Linuxes on Itanium
systems.

2) What does the "ip" information in /ver/log/messages mean?

I found that the listing from the "-Wl,--print-map" does not match
what /var/log/messages says. Or, otherwise I'm missing something.
The messages file says the problem occurs at "ip 400000000005d6e1"
and the listing from the linker has this:

Add -fPIC to get the compilation going.

From `man gcc',

-fPIC
If supported for the target machine, emit position-independent
code, suitable for dynamic linking and avoiding any limit on the
size of the global offset table. This option makes a difference on
the m68k and the SPARC.

Position-independent code requires special support, and therefore
works only on certain machines.

Two ways...
'b' bounces the message completely unmodified to a new address

'Esc E' uses a current message as a template for a new message,
allowing you to fiddle with anything like detach attachments and
such. You may have to clear the "From" address (Esc F) from
the send menu if you want it to appear to come from you.

For future searchers, here is the recipe for "opening" a Foundry EdgeIron 48G:

In the web based interface, go to
IGMP Snooping --> IGMP Configuration -->

I made my first vcd (about my baby, Sean).
With,

Windows Movie Maker (capture from DV and categorize).
Ulead VideoStudio (add menu and music, then burn to CD).

Things to note,
To get the higher quality, use AVI (pal) to capture from DV. Make sure your harddisk is fast enough! Windows Movie Maker tends to hang, maybe due to the files too big :)
Ulead VideoStudio 8 doesn't support ac3 yet.
use transcode and mplayer to convert,

Check to ensure,

module "uhci-hcd" is loaded.

and

Mouse option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
"Protocol" "IMPS/2"
"ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
"Emulate3Buttons" "no"

Reason,
When USB module is not loaded, USB mouse works as a normal psaux, things not normal are,
cursor moves very fast,
wheel is not functioning.

but then /etc/init.d/net.eth0 tends to fail.

Then I did an alias in /etc/module.d/alias

alias eth0 e1000

then

modules-update

but only GKrellM 1.x is supported, so ...

In kernel compilation, must enable i2c hardware bus also (in my case, it's Intel 801). i2c-dev seems not necessary.
